Stories from the Easel…

As I build this website and put this first collection togetherg, I’ve realized that the theme of “coming home” keeps working its way through my paintings.

I think the concept of home is different for everyone. It’s fluid. It can be the place you grew up, a person, a memory, or even just an idea. For me, eastern Oregon will always be home.

It’s where I became an adult. Where I fell in love so hard. Where we started our family. (Well, the Let’R Buck Room had a little to do with that! If you know, you know. 😊)

Boomer was my home, too. He was my safe place. I knew that even when he wasn’t right there with me, I was safe and protected. I never worried about being anything other than myself. He gave me that freedom.

It’s a tough thing when that kind of home is ripped away from you in the space of a heartbeat.

After losing Boomer, I started working my way back toward my original idea of home. It took me another decade to find my way there.

It’s funny how much our idea of home can change over the course of a life.

When I was young, and then first married, I wanted nothing more than to leave home. I wanted to go somewhere no one knew me, where I could recreate myself. I had been a shy, awkward kid, but somewhere along the way, as I became a wife and mother, I blossomed. These days I’m pretty social—although still occasionally awkward. 😬

Boomer used to say I could make a short story long.

He wasn’t wrong.

But maybe that’s because there are some stories that take a long time to understand.

After the unthinkable happened and my world shattered, I began my homeward-bound journey. I’ve left and come back more times than I can count, but I’ve noticed something about those returns.

Each time, I was coming home to heal.

Usually from heartache.

And maybe that’s why “home” keeps finding its way into my paintings.

The roads. The paths. The familiar places. The light at the end of the day. The feeling that somewhere ahead, there is a place where you can finally exhale.

Here I am again.

Home.

And I think that’s the beautiful thing about home. No matter how many times you leave, it’s still there waiting for you.

Maybe home is a person. Maybe it’s a place. Maybe it’s a memory, or simply a feeling.

Whatever home is for you, I hope you find your way back to it.

And I hope, when you do, it feels a little bit like coming home.

I have several people to thank. First, to my beautiful daughter, Paige you have been an inspiration to me your whole life. Thank you for never giving up on me and loving me, no matter what. To my late husband, Boomer, who inspired the name for Dragonfly Creations. Thank you for the Dance. I wouldn’t have wanted to miss a thing. To my sweet momma, thank you for encouraging me when I didn’t think I could do it. None of this would have been possible if you hadn’t pushed me to keep going. I miss you momma. To my dad, you are the one who gave me a love of the outdoors and first showed me the beauty all around us. Thank you for that. I love you all so much, each of you have molded Dragonfly Creations in some way, and for that I’ll be forever grateful.
